The term “ikat” is derived from the Indonesian word for “tie," and in the Malay language means “to bind.” Why? Because the patterns in ikat cloth are achieved by tying or binding individual bundles of threads in a set motif before dying them and before they are made into cloth. When the dyeing is finished, the bindings are removed and the threads are loom-woven into cloth. A characteristic of ikats is an apparent “blurriness” that is a result of the extreme difficulty the weaver has lining up the dyed yarns so that the pattern comes out in the finished cloth as desired. However, that very blurriness is prized by textile collectors the world over. EnjoyIstanbul’s ikat scarves are made entirely by hand, by a women’s collective in Uzbekistan.
