The meaning of the word Tulu in Turkish is long haired. Tulu rugs are woven with a coarse weave and extremely long pile of tufts of wool interwoven into the underlying design. Tulus are made in the mountainous regions around Konya where the goats have wonderfully thick wool rich in lanolin. These rugs were originally used as a means of keeping warm and for sleeping. The combination of the silky wool and lengthy pile create rugs that are exceptionally lustrous and soft to the touch. The patterns, even in antique pieces, are new and fresh in their simplistic design.
